Preliminary Information
Before diving into this tutorial and explaining how to see checkpoints on Waze, it’s necessary to make an important initial premise.
First of all, you should know that reporting a checkpoint could be considered a crime if such action is deemed as interruption of public service. In this case, the Penal Code provides up to one year of imprisonment for all offenders. However, since there is no clear norm regarding this, the Penal Code is subject to interpretations and there have been past instances where reporting checkpoints was not considered a crime.
That said, regardless of how a checkpoint is reported (e.g., flashing lights, honking, or using online solutions), it is still considered illegal and is a violation of the Highway Code punishable by administrative penalties.
Moreover, it should be noted that although reporting a checkpoint may seem like a kindness towards other drivers, a report could allow potential criminals for whom the checkpoint was organized to evade controls and take alternative routes, continuing to endanger the safety of other drivers.
For these reasons, there is no option available on Waze to report and thus view checkpoints. However, regarding Waze, I can mention that it is still possible to report mobile speed cameras and, therefore, the presence of a patrol on the road. Throughout this guide, I will refer to this possibility.
How to See Checkpoints on Waze
As I mentioned earlier in this guide, it is not possible to see checkpoints on Waze. The only available solution is to report and thus visualize any patrols conducting speed checks with mobile speed cameras.
In this case, all you have to do to locate a mobile speed camera is to open the Waze app for Android and iPhone/iPad and, if it’s your first access, press the Continue button to allow Waze to access your location.
Then press the Accept button to agree to the service’s terms of use, and select I understand to accept the privacy policy. After that, choose whether to log in with your account by selecting the Log in option, otherwise tap the Get Started button to use Waze without an account or create one: in the latter case, you will need to press the ☰ button at the top left and select the View Profile and Register this account options.
Regardless of the choice made, you will automatically view the Waze map where you can identify any mobile speed cameras, distinguishable by the icon of a police officer.
By pressing the icon in question, you can also view comments posted by other users and the number of drivers who have confirmed its presence: if you logged into Waze with your account, you can publish comments yourself by pressing the speech bubble icon and confirm the report by tapping the thumbs up icon.
You’ll find it useful to know that by accessing Waze’s settings, you have the option to modify some reporting options: press the ☰ button at the top left and select the Settings option.
In the new screen displayed, tap on Alerts and Reports and access the Area section, where you can set the radius (Only on your route, 5 km, 50 km, All, etc.) within which to view reports on the map.
From the Alerts and Reports screen, by pressing on Reports and then the Mobile camera option, you can check if the options for this type of report are active. If not, toggle the switches for Show on map and Alerts while driving from OFF to ON to view mobile speed cameras on the map and receive an alert when near such a report.
For completeness of information, I can inform you that it is possible to access Waze from a computer by connecting to the official website of the service and allowing the browser to access your location. After that, you can easily identify any mobile speed cameras on the map, as they are also identifiable by the icon of a police officer.
Clicking on the icon related to a mobile speed camera, you can view comments published by other drivers and the number of users who have confirmed this report.
Just as I indicated earlier in the sections dedicated to the Waze app for smartphones and tablets, you can also comment and confirm the report from your computer by clicking the speech bubble icon and the thumbs up one, provided you have logged into your account by pressing the Log in button at the top right.
How to Report Checkpoints on Waze
What do you say? You would like to report checkpoints on Waze? In this case, I have already explained in the initial lines of this guide that there is no option available to report and locate checkpoints on Waze.
Still, the only option you can consider is to report the presence of a patrol conducting speed checks with a mobile speed camera.
If you want to make a report and have already logged into Waze with your account, when you are near the speed camera to report, press the + button at the bottom right and select the Mobile Speed Camera option from the menu that opens.
Then indicate whether this is located in your direction of travel by selecting the Mobile Speed Camera again or on the opposite side of the road. Finally, press the Report button and that’s it.
I want to emphasize that it is not possible to cancel a report, even in case of errors. However, this will be automatically removed if it does not receive interactions from other users within about 60 minutes.
Finally, I want to inform you that from the computer it is not possible to make a report on Waze.
