How to Remove Water from iPhone Speakers

A moment of distraction, and the “damage” is done: your iPhone has ended up in water. Fortunately, modern iPhones are designed to be waterproof or at least water-resistant, so you feel relatively at ease regarding this type of damage. However, you may have noticed that the audio is no longer as clear as before. In fact, this is a common issue after exposure to liquids, but fortunately, there are several solutions to this problem.

In the following lines, I will show you how to remove water from iPhone speakers using different approaches that exploit the ability to emit a constant sound characterized by sine wave frequencies, capable of expelling liquid through controlled vibrations of the device.

That said, let’s not waste any more time: get comfortable and prepare to read and follow the instructions I included in this tutorial. I wish you a good read and good luck with it!

Preliminary Operations

Whether you have an iPhone 11, iPhone 12, or one of the latest models from Apple, it is essential to follow some preliminary steps to best prepare the device. Only after completing them can you proceed to remove water from the speakers using the specific techniques I have included in this tutorial.

First of all, if your phone has fallen into water, the first thing to do is to turn it off (hold the side button and one of the volume buttons and slide the shown slider). After that, remove the case and any present accessories, then use a soft, dry cloth to clean and dry the exterior of the iPhone. Focus on the openings, such as the USB-C (or Lightning) connector and the speakers, to remove visible water, but make sure not to insert anything into the openings, as you might push the water deeper.

If you do not have a suitable soft cloth for this operation, you can use a microfiber one. If you want advice on which one to buy, feel free to refer to the suggestions below.

For easier water drainage from the speakers, you can also place the iPhone upright (with the speakers facing down) and leave it in this position for at least 30 minutes: this will help the water flow down. If the iPhone has been exposed to a large amount of water (e.g. it was submerged), you might consider leaving it in this position for an hour or more.

Now that most of the work is done and you’ve dried the surface of the iPhone, turn it on (holding the side button until the Apple logo appears), and get ready to follow the instructions below.

How to Remove Water from iPhone Speakers

As mentioned, to perform the operation in question, it is necessary to resort to solutions that offer sine wave frequencies to produce a constant sound capable of expelling water through vibrations. Specifically, you can use a shortcut, a website, or an application of this type. Below, we will see how to remove water from iPhone speakers utilizing each of these methods.

Water Eject

Water Eject is a shortcut that will vibrate your iPhone until excess water is expelled from the speakers. You can utilize it through the Shortcuts app from Apple, which is already installed by default on your device (but you can also download it from the App Store, if you have removed it previously) and allows you, indeed, to create quick commands and automations useful for performing common tasks in a few moments with a tap.

To get started, tap on this link from Safari on your iPhone to access the Water Eject page, then press the (+) Add Shortcut button. Now open the Shortcuts app by tapping its icon present on your Home screen or in the app library of your iPhone, then tap on the box related to the Water Eject command that you just downloaded.

Now, from the small menu that opens, select the Begin option (make sure first to place the phone upright with the speakers facing down and to raise the volume to facilitate the water outflow). After a short countdown, the speakers of your iPhone will begin to expel the water, producing a sound similar to a low vibration. You can choose to wait for the end of the process or stop it by tapping the Stop symbol (the square inside the circle) present in the Water Eject box. Alternatively, you can choose the Touch option, which will allow your iPhone to continue producing the sound until you decide to stop it, also with a tap on the Stop symbol in the shortcut box. Through the Settings menu, you will also have the option to share the shortcut, read information about the version, or send feedback to the developers via email.

Once this process is complete, it’s time to check the result! Try playing a song on your iPhone. If the audio has returned to normal, congratulations! You have just solved the problem! If, however, you still notice that the sound “crackles,” don’t worry: you can repeat the process or consider other options, as listed below.

Fix My Speakers

Fixmyspeakers.com is a website designed to solve the problem of water trapped in smartphone speakers, including iPhones. It uses a system that produces a high-pitched sound specifically designed to generate vibrations that help remove water from the speakers easily.

To use this solution, grab your iPhone and visit the website of the tool in question, manage the cookies, and press the button with the air and water droplet emoji (you may need to scroll the screen to find it) to start the constant frequency sound.

As the sound plays, ensure you place your iPhone with the speakers facing down and turn up the volume to help the water flow out more easily. Let the sound play for at least a minute, then press the button with the air and water droplet emoji again to stop it. At this point, try playing a song to check if the audio quality has returned to normal. If the problem persists, you can repeat the process.

Sonic

The Sonic application can be useful for removing water from iPhone speakers. It uses the same principle as the previous solutions, employing specific frequency sounds to generate vibrations that help expel the water present in the speakers. It is essentially free, but offers in-app purchases to remove ads and unlock additional features (starting from €1.99).

To use this solution, download and install the app from the App Store, then launch it by tapping its icon, follow the introductory tutorial, and press the (x) in the top right of the Premium plan presentation screen.

Once you are in the main screen of Sonic, tap on the play symbol located in the bottom right of the page: the app will start producing a continuous sound, helping liquid escape from the speakers. Again, I recommend placing the iPhone upright and turning up the volume to facilitate the process. When the visible percentage in the top left reaches 100%, the process will stop automatically (if you want to stop it earlier, press the Stop button in the bottom right).

Then try playing some music, and if the problem is not resolved, repeat the operation (if necessary, tap on 60 in the top right to initiate playback for one minute).
